James Gleeson

Over a career that spanned half a century, John Gleeson has dedicated himself to the exploration of subconscious imagery that defines his oeuvre and in so doing has become Australia’s leading Surrealist artist. Excelling as a lecturer, art critic and historian Gleeson has been described as a genuine Renaissance man, whose talents extend well beyond the canvas. A retrospective of Gleeson’s work, Beyond the Screen of Sight, was exhibited in 2005 at the National Gallery of Victoria; in 2003 the Art Gallery of New South Wales exhibited Gleeson’s drawings for paintings. One of Australia’s oldest masters, Gleeson died in Sydney aged 92.
